Nokia delivers its millionth d-box
March 31, 1999

- Nokia Multimedia Terminals today announced that it has delivered its millionth digital d-box to the German KirchGroup. More than 800.000 subscribers to digital service providers such as DF1, Premiere and Deutsche Telekom use the d-boxTM today. It is also frequently used for Business TV purposes in numerous companies throughout Germany. During a ceremony at Nokia Multimedia Terminals' headquarters in Düsseldorf on March 15, Heikki Koskinen, President of Nokia Multimedia Terminals, handed over a golden d-boxTM to Gabor Toth, Managing Director of BetaResearch, the research & development company of the KirchGroup.



Nokia and BetaResearch have worked in close cooperation since 1993 to develop digital receivers/decoders. The cooperation was an important contribution to the development of the common European Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) standard. The official contract for delivery of one million d-boxes was signed in August 1995, and so far this is the biggest single order in the 75 year old history of the entertainment industry.

The d-boxTM is a DVB compliant digital multimedia terminal used for reception of digital pay-TV and free-to-air services as well as for a wide array of interactive services such as games, interactive advertising, home shopping , home banking or internet access. The d-boxTM includes the software platform "betanova" as well as the conditional access system "betacrypt", both developed by BetaResearch.

The product portfolio includes conditional access, smart card technology, decoder software, interactive applications, subscriber management and playout scheduling systems.
