Nokia presents new products at CTIA Wireless '99
February 08, 1999
Nokia today introduced new products for CDMA and TDMA standards at CTIA Wireless '99 in New Orleans, USA. Nokia launched the world's first tri-mode/dual band CDMA phone, the Nokia 6185 for digital CDMA 1900/800 and analog AMPS systems. Also, two new CDMA models to the Nokia 5100 series of digital wireless phones were introduced -- the Nokia 5170 (CDMA 1900) and the Nokia 5180 (CDMA 800/AMPS dual-mode). Nokia also announced TDMA and CDMA models to the Nokia 8800 series, the ultimate in sophisticated design that defines the high-end premium digital phone market.
The new Nokia 6185 (CDMA 1900/800/AMPS) is a true 3-volt phone based on Nokia's own chip-set design and includes new features such as an internal modem for data and fax connections, an in-built vibrating alert, and up to 4.5 hours of talk time and more than 8 days of standby time. The Nokia 6185 incorporates a broad set of features, including the Nokia-developed personalization feature called "Profiles," which enable fast selection of phone settings used in different environments and lifestyles. The new phone also features a high-resolution, illuminated graphical display, Caller ID sensitive ringing tones that can be assigned to 10 important callers, an alarm clock, calendar and four electronic games. The Nokia 6185 employs advanced CDMA capabilities, including full support of CDMA IS-95 features, two Number Assignment Modules (NAMs), Over-the-Air Activation (OTA) and enhanced audio and speech quality achieved with a EVRC (Enhanced Variable Rate Codec), 8 kbit/s and 13 kbit/s vocoders. The phone also supports conference calling of up to three parties. The new Nokia 6185 will begin shipping during first quarter 1999.
Based on Nokia's own chip-set design, the affordable, easy-to-use Nokia 5170 (CDMA 1900) and Nokia 5180 (CDMA 800) CDMA digital handsets are targeted specifically for consumers seeking value and style in a wireless phone. With the 5100 series, Nokia has introduced a new innovation in wireless: the uniquely fashionable Xpress-on color covers, which allow users to quickly snap on and snap off a variety of colored faceplates in a matter of seconds, without using tools. Nokia's innovative and highly intuitive Nokia NaviKey concept- a new feature that lets phone owners use a single button (the NaviTMKey) to easily access all the powerful functions of the phone - is incorporated in the Nokia 5100 series CDMA phones. Both phones also support pager, voicemail and Caller Identification services in CDMA digital networks. The Nokia 5100 series CDMA phones will begin shipping during the second quarter of 1999.
At just under four ounces, the Nokia 8800 series features a distinctive, glossy chrome finish and sliding keypad cover for people who desire style and elegance in a very discreet phone design. The Nokia 8800 series is a full-featured digital phone with an integrated antenna, a first for a Nokia product in the Americas market. The Nokia 8800 series product line in the Americas will include the Nokia 8860 (tri-mode AMPS/ TDMA 800/TDMA 1900), and in CDMA will support both the cellular and the PCS systems. The phones will be available in TDMA and CDMA during the third quarter of 1999. The first Nokia 8800 series phone, the Nokia 8810 (GSM 900), began shipping in Europe and Asia during August 1998 and continues to be the most sought after wireless phone in the world.
