Nokia Foundation and the Fulbright Center create a new fellowship
February 12, 1999



The Fulbright Center and Nokia Foundation have signed an agreement creating a new scholarship program, which brings American scholars to lecture at Finnish universities in electronics, information and telecommunications technologies. The first Fulbright-NOKIA Fellowship recipient will arrive in Finland during the academic year 2000-2001.The agreement on this new program was signed on February 12, 1999.

The Fulbright Center is a non-profit service organization that specializes in academic and cultural exchange between Finland and North America. In 1998 the Fulbright Center awarded over one million USD in grants and scholarships. The Fulbright Program is one of the most prestigious academic exchange programs in the world. During over a half a century, approximately 220 000 scholars, students and professionals have participated in the program. Prominent Fulbright alumni include Boutros Boutros-Ghali, Ingvar Carlsson, Milton Friedman, Javier Solana, Väinö Linna, Leif Segerstam and Max Jakobson. The Finnish ASLA-Fulbright Program celebrates this year its 50th Anniversary.

Nokia Foundation is a Finnish foundation set up by Nokia in 1995 to support the development of scientific competence and educational capabilities in information and telecommunications technologies in Finland. The foundation grants annual scholarships, fellowships and awards. Last December the annual Nokia Foundation Award was given to Professor Arto Salomaa from University of Turku. In 1997 the Award was presented to Linus Torvalds, in 1996 to Pekka Tarjanne and in 1995 to Lauri Kuokkanen.
