Nokia to strengthen its datacom capabilities with new IP and Access Solutions division
February 16, 1999

Nokia has decided to enhance its datacom activities with the establishment of a new IP and Access Solutions division within Nokia Telecommunications.

The new division will be formed by combining the Fixed Access System business of Nokia Telecommunications with both internal and acquired IP and datacom products and competencies. It will be headed by Kari Suneli, Senior Vice President, IP and Access Solutions, Nokia Telecommunications. Mr Suneli has previously been responsible for the Fixed Access Systems business division.

"Growth in datacom will be driven by the explosion in Internet usage and Nokia will draw on its expertise of IP competencies and existing skills in the development of broadband access technology to support this transition," says Kari Suneli.

"Nokia is strengthening its capabilities in broadband access systems and IP networking, as the volume of data traffic in the networks continues to increase. We will be concentrating on access and service platforms for both operators and Internet service providers."

As part of this new division, Nokia has established a new IP Solutions business unit, based in the United States. The IP Solutions Group (ISG) will be headed by Mika Vehviläinen, Senior Vice President, ISG, Nokia Telecommunications.

The IP and Access Solutions division will be operational from 1 March 1999.
