Nokia unveils new products to enhance the Nokia GSM Intranet Office - part of the Nokia Total Mobility Office solutions
February 23, 1999
Nokia today introduces new network elements developed for the Nokia GSM Intranet Office solution. This innovative combination of Internet Protocol (IP) telephony and GSM technology enables local switching of phone calls via the company's local area network (LAN) - while switching outside calls normally through the GSM network.
The compact state-of-the-art products in the Nokia GSM Intranet Office solution include a gateway interface with the external telecommunications network, as well as a local switch for intra-office calls.
A network management server can be integrated into the operator's existing Network Management System, and an intranet location register provides directory services for subscriber profiles.
The Nokia GSM Intranet Office solution is based on proven GSM technology, so it can fully replace fixed-line private branch exchange (PBX) systems, providing more efficient network operations, and greatly reducing corporate investment costs. This also helps operators to increase GSM usage, both inside the office and outside, where calls are routed as normal through the operator's existing GSM network.
"By providing corporate customers with local switching that rivals the cost and quality of PBX systems, operators can increase GSM usage among high-value professional users," says Olli Oittinen, Vice President, System Marketing and Sales, Radio Access Systems, Nokia Telecommunications. "And the merging of GSM and IP technologies will help GSM operators to further develop data networking and IP telephony services, allowing them to expand into the corporate IP world."
In addition to voice service, the Nokia GSM Intranet Office solution supports seamless data communications, fax, Short Message Service (SMS), number identification, call barring and forwarding, cell broadcasting, switchboard and reference services, as well as additional PBX-based services. Users can access these services using standard GSM phones, enjoying the benefits of one phone and one number.
The Nokia Total Mobility Office solution, brings flexibility, mobility and freedom to the office, enabling GSM to become the preferred phone in the workplace. This will be made possible with the launch of new products including Nokia Location Dependent Services (LDS) and the Nokia Service Positioning System, the Nokia Service Gateway and the new Nokia InSite Base Station.
