Nokia introduces optimised GPRS solution for new mobile data services

Nokia today introduced a new network solution for creating and implementing General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) data services. As a leading telecommunications and data communications supplier, Nokia has designed an end-to-end GPRS system that includes both Internet Protocol (IP) core and radio network infrastructure, as well as integrated service management and billing solutions.
New discrete IP core elements in this complete GPRS solution include the Nokia Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN), the Nokia Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) and the Nokia Charging Gateway. To upgrade current GSM radio networks for GPRS, the Nokia solution includes new software that can be remotely downloaded to Nokia Base Stations, therefore no site visits are needed.
The Nokia GGSN connects the GPRS network to the Internet, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and corporate intranets, allowing multiple secure data access points simultaneously. The architecture of the Nokia GGSN is based on Nokia's award-winning IP routing technology, which offers such advanced features as an integrated firewall functionality for excellent data security.
The Nokia SGSN is a network element that converts protocols between the IP core and the radio network. Based on the proven Nokia DX 200 switching platform, it serves functions such as terminal mobility management, user verification and collection of billing data.
A unique feature in Nokia's solution is the stand-alone Nokia Charging Gateway, which provides a single access point from the GPRS network to the operator's billing system, helping to reduce the load on each support node. Charging information generated by the SGSN and GGSN is relayed to this system, which then consolidates and pre-processes the data records to reduce the billing system's processing load.

GPRS offers a pardigm shift in laptop connectivity enabling always-connected E-mail and other corporte applications. GPRS will also boost new applications in handheld terminals and offers the best connectivity for WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) applications.
The complete GPRS solution offers a massive boost in wireless data throughput with speeds of over 100 kbit/s being possible. Furthermore, GPRS enables instant IP connectivity on-the-move, because connection times are much shorter than with current circuit-switched solutions.
GPRS provides an essential stepping stone to UMTS technology, as third generation GSM will be packet switched. GPRS has a number of advantages when it comes to Internet connection and other packet switched networks, both from network and service evolution viewpoints.
