Nokia to deliver its HSCSD-solution to Telenor Mobil, Norway, for enhanced GSM data services
January 20, 1999
Nokia and Telenor Mobil have signed an agreement for the delivery of Nokia's High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) solution, enabling the introduction of advanced mobile data services in Telenor Mobil's GSM network.
With HSCSD, data speeds can be increased from the current 9.6. kbit/s to 14.4 kbit/s in a single traffic channel. TeleNor Mobil will be offering data rates of up to 38.4 kbit/s.
A feature unique to Nokia's HSCSD solution is that this high-speed data functionality is available in the GSM base station subsystem with a software upgrade, no base station hardware modifications are needed.
"The higher bitrates made available with Nokia's HSCSD technology will bring sophisticated data services to both our home and business customers," says Product Director,Trond Wiborg, Telenor Mobil. "It also means data services can be implemented without major investment in network infrastructure."
"We see wireless data playing an increasing role alongside other value added services," says Finn-Erik Hermansen, Managing Director, Nokia Telecommunications, Norway. "This agreement will see a wide range of facilities allowing faster data retrival for Internet and e-mail, for example, become possible through the GSM network."
