Nokia to supply Racal with fixed transmission equipment for UK-wide network
January 28, 1999

Racal Telecom has selected Nokia to supply a range of communication equipment for its nationwide access network. The call-off contract, which was run under competitive tendering conditions, is expected to be worth 22 million Euros (£15M). Supply of the equipment has already begun.

The three-year deal, with a further two-year option to extend, marks the beginning of a major investment programme by Racal to build up its provision of narrowband and broadband services to its corporate customer base, including Camelot, NatWest Bank, Railtrack and over 40 Government establishments throughout the UK.

"We are pleased to continue our working relationship with Nokia" explained Bob Falconer, Networks Director, Racal Telecom Ltd. "This latest solution will enable us to smoothly upgrade our access network functionality to our customers and, because of the modular platform to the Nokia EKSOS solution, leave us with sufficient flexibility to grow our network and services to meet future demands."

The Nokia EKSOS solution provides the capability for using standard V.5 interfaces for connections over HDSL and xDSL for the delivery of high speed voice and data services throughout the nationwide network. Higher speeds will enable corporate customers to send and receive data via LAN connections more efficiently, even those who are remotely connected to the network. Racal Telecom will also be able to introduce new services to their customers quickly and efficiently. The network will be managed using Nokia's NMS100 network management system.

"We have been supplying Racal for over ten years and we are pleased to continue and grow our relationship," said Mr. Peter Kühne, Managing Director, Nokia Telecommunications, Nokia UK Ltd. "Racal is a key strategic partner in the operator sector for us, because of their focus on the corporate sector and the onset of V5 and broadband services provides many new opportunities for both our organisations."

Racal Telecom has three principal business activities. The company provides a full range of managed telecommunication services including voice, data, Internet, messaging, mobile cellular and multi-media communications to the Government and commercial sectors. It also undertakes major communications infrastructure projects and provides maintenance to support the railways' communications. The company is part of the Racal Electronics Group.

Nokia is the world's leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile and fixed telecom networks including related customer services. Nokia also supplies solutions and products for fixed and wireless datacom, as well as multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1997, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion (USD 9.8 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on five European Stock Exchanges and on the New York Stock Exchange (NOK.A), has sales in 130 countries and employs more than 42,000 people world-wide.
