December 15, 1998
- Including the Nokia High Capacity GSM solution
Nokia and Finnish operator Sonera have announced a multi-year frame agreement, valued at almost USD 140 million, for the supply of equipment for dual band GSM services.
Nokia will deliver its new High Capacity mobile switching centres, GSM 1800 and GSM 900 base stations, base station controllers, home location registers, the Nokia NMS network management system and a comprehensive range of customer services.
In addition, Nokia will supply its MetroSite High Capacity GSM base stations, which will enable Sonera to increase network capacity using cost-efficient microcellular solutions.
"The subscriber figures in GSM networks are growing rapidly. This developing technology will bring new possibilities for our customers and will place increasing demands on the networks as our subscriber figures continue to show rapid growth," says Olavi Koistinen, Senior Vice President, Mobile Telephone Services, Sonera. "Nokia's fast delivery times and their visions for future services were among the reasons why we chose Nokia. This agreement is part of Sonera's previously disclosed investment plan and the deliveries will be divided between 1999 and 2001."
"The competencies of Finnish operators are among the highest in the world and Sonera is clearly a front-runner, who offered dual band services at a very early stage," says Juhani Koivula, Area General Manager, Finland and the Baltic Countries, Nokia. "We have focussed on dual band technology and our solution increases the efficiency of total network lifetime costs as well as providing a solid basis for the provision of value-added services."
