New World PCS chooses Nokia's High Speed Data solution - with additional network expansion
December 15, 1998
Nokia and New World PCS Ltd (NWPCS) have signed a contract for a further GSM 1800 network expansion in Hong Kong SAR. The agreement includes the supply of Nokia's High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) solution, enabling the introduction of enhanced mobile data services in the network.
The deal will also see immediate delivery of Nokia's mobile switching centre, home location register, base station controllers, base stations, as well as an upgrade to existing network elements.
"We chose to continue our partnership with Nokia because of their market leading position in the provision of GSM 1800 systems," says Albert Wong, Chief Executive, NWPCS. "With Nokia, we can provide significant value-added services including Intelligent Network and Short Message services. Our subscribers will now benefit further with the dramatic savings in time that high speed data brings, for the transmission of data traffic."
"Nokia supplied New World with a complete Personal Communication Network system based on GSM 1800 technology in October 1996," added Mike Mulvey, Managing Director, Nokia Telecommunications, Hong Kong. "This agreement, including the supply of Nokia's HSCSD solution, means a wide range of facilities allowing faster data retrival for Internet and e-mail will become possible through the GSM network."
With HSCSD, data speeds can be increased from the current 9.6. kbit/s to 14.4 kbit/s in a single traffic channel. Using multiplexing techniques operators will be able to offer data rates up to 57.6 kbit/s, comparable to current ISDN speeds.
A feature unique to Nokia's HSCSD solution is that this high-speed data functionality is available in the GSM base station subsystem with a software upgrade, no base station hardware modifications are needed.
NWPCS is part of the New World Telephone Group of Hong Kong, and is working with New World Telephone Ltd and New World Paging Ltd to provide a full range of telecommunications services, including fixed-line, international mobile paging services and multimedia payphone services.
