Nokia Foundation Award in 1998 to Professor Arto Salomaa

Nokia Foundation has decided to grant visiting fellowships to three professors for their stay at Finnish universities and scholarships to 33 post-graduate students. In addition, five teams supporting interaction between universities and the industry have been granted team awards. This year, the annual Nokia Foundation Award has been given to Professor Arto Salomaa from University of Turku. The grants amount to a total of FIM 1 235,000.
Nokia Foundation is a Finnish foundation set up by Nokia in 1995 to support the development of scientific competence and educational capabilities in information and telecommunications technologies in Finland.
The Nokia Foundation Award, worth FIM 50,000, was granted to Professor Salomaa due to his groundbreaking work in the development of Finnish education, research and applications in the field of cryptology. "Arto Salomaa can be considered our national master in cryptology whose work has significantly increased the Finnish internationally recognised competence in the field of cryptology," notes the Foundation.
Last year, the award was presented to Linus Torvalds, the creator of the Linux operating system. In 1996 the award was given to Pekka Tarjanne and in 1995 to Lauri Kuokkanen.
