Nokia tops off groundbreaking year with awards sweep
December 29, 1998

- The leading UK mobile magazine What Cellphone has presented Nokia with four of its prestigious 'Phones of '98' awards. The Nokia 6110, which had the British public 'gaming' on their mobiles for the first time was judged Best GSM Phone of 1998, whilst the tiny, chrome 8810 favoured by superstars like Michael Owen, Prince Naseem and All Saints won Best Luxury Phone.

Xpress-ing yourself has become all the rage for the UK's trendsetters as the 5110 picked up the Best Budget Phone award, and the Nokia 6150 dual-band was recognised as "undoubtedly the best ever phone for the One 2 One network" as winner of the Best One 2 One (GSM 1800) Phone category.

What Cellphone editor Phil Lattimore sees one underlying factor behind Nokia's success.
"Quite simply, 1998 has seen Nokia produce some excellent phones across all price ranges."

The What Cellphone Awards success tops off an excellent 1998 for Nokia. The company led the market in innovation with a series of typically user-friendly, design and lifestyle-conscious phones. In October, Nokia announced with its interim results that it believed it has become the number one mobile manufacturer worldwide. In December, Nokia's cumulated mobile phone production volume reached the threshold of 100 million units.

Nokia is the world's leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile and fixed telecom networks including related customer services. Nokia also supplies solutions and products for fixed and wireless datacom, as well as multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1997, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion (USD 9.8 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on five European Stock Exchanges and on the New York Stock Exchange (NOK.A), has sales in 130 countries and employs more than 42,000 people world-wide.
