Nokia teams up with Deloitte Consulting / ICS to deliver remote access to enterprise software
November 04, 1998

Mobile access to ERP systems on Nokia 9110 Communicator opens a wealth of competitive opportunities for businesses

Nokia and Deloitte Consulting / ICS today announced a world first in the development of a platform to allow remote access to Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software systems via Nokia's new 9110 Communicator. The platform is expected to provide significant cost savings and efficiency benefits to businesses and customers.

The unique server-based platform was developed in conjunction with leading consultancy firm Deloitte Consulting / ICS and will be demonstrated at their booth at Asia-Pacific SAPPHIRE '98 from 9 to 11 November.

The new platform allows staff across an organisation to access and update ERP software data in real-time through the Nokia 9110 Communicator's standard web browser. Business-critical information in corporate Intranets can now be accessed remotely, providing greater flexibility and business productivity.

"In developing a remote access tool for ERP systems we are predicting significant changes in the way organisations' customers and staff access real-time data," said Kim Scott, Ecomm/Internet Service Line, Deloitte Consulting / ICS. "This is made possible by sophisticated mobile devices such as the Nokia 9110, and will be even more powerful with the arrival of high bandwidth wireless networks in Australia around the middle of next year."

"Today's announcement marks a significant new stage in the evolution of enterprise applications which will greatly expand the power and accessibility of ERP tools such as SAP/R3TM. The top line benefit for businesses is an increased return on investment for ERP implementations," said Kim Scott.

"Easy access to information while on the move is becoming a key factor to competitiveness," agrees Janne Jormalainen, General Manager, Wireless Data & Technology, Nokia Mobile Phones Asia Pacific. "This project demonstrates the versatility of the Nokia 9110 Communicator as a comprehensive mobile office - delivering efficiency benefits to staff and customers."

The new platform is being developed for a range of business applications, including sales management, project management, human resources, purchasing, materials management, reporting and direct customer access.

The development removes existing barriers to an effective mobile workforce by taking key business information from the desktop into the mobile environment. The partnership aims to provide a suite of applications and technology to allow individuals in an organisation to access information regardless of their location.

"The platform is remarkably easy to use - no modifications are needed to the Nokia 9110 configuration, the system requires minimal staff training and users can have real-time data at their fingertips within seconds. This further demonstrates the simplicity of creating third-party solutions for use with the Nokia 9110 Communicator" said Janne Jormalainen.

The Nokia 9110 Communicator combines an ultimate, pocket-sized mobile office with a superb GSM phone and weighs 253g. All applications - GSM phone with hands-free feature, telefax, Internet and Intranets, e-mail, short messaging service (SMS) and calendar - work together seamlessly. For example, the user can check e-mail, download a file, edit it, save it and then send it by fax.

Demonstrations of an SAP integrated mobile sales force application using the new platform will be given at booth #56 at Asia-Pacific SAPPHIRE '98 in Melbourne. Visitors will be able to view the process of conducting a real-time sale online.
