Fixed and mobile services for StarHub, with Nokia's fully integrated solution

Breakthrough deal in Singapore bringing fixed and mobile convergence

StarHub Pte. Ltd. and Nokia, have signed a contract for the delivery of a total integrated fixed and mobile solution in Singapore. The value of this contract is approximately S$100 million. The breakthrough deal will see the provision of fixed and mobile services, using Nokia's integrated DX200 switching solution as the common platform together with Intelligent Network capabilities.As part of the agreement, Nokia will provide a full turnkey GSM 1800 mobile network for StarHub.



Nokia will also supply a state of the art integrated Fixed and Mobile Voice Network Management System which will bring a significant decrease in operating costs. Deliveries will begin immediately.

"The integration of Nokia's GSM 1800 network technology and fixed network technology will allow StarHub to provide cost-efficient innovative new services within a short time to market."

Ltd. "With this contract, our customers will benefit from the state of the art integrated network, able to deliver voice, data and video through leading edge technologies and flexible platforms."

By offering integrated fixed and mobile services together with the Intelligent Network provision, StarHub will be able to optimize their network operations," said Kari Ahola, Senior Vice President, Nokia Telecommunications, South East Asia Pacicific. "The Nokia solution will create an ideal platform for the introduction of future services and technologies."

For StarHub's mobile network, Nokia will supply a complete GSM 1800 network including radio access, base station controllers, a DX200 based switching subsystem and Artus messaging platform. For the fixed network equipment Nokia will be supplying international gateways, transit switches as well as local switches. Being a front-runner in the deployment of V5 based open access standards; the Nokia fixed network will be fully V5 compatible.

In addition Nokia will supply a common platform for Intelligent Network (IN) services, as well as an integrated Network Management System (NMS). The Intelligent Network and the Network Management System will support both fixed and mobile networks.

StarHub is a joint venture between ST Telemedia, Singapore Power, Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp. and British Telecommunications. It was recently awarded both licenses to operate fixed and mobile communications services in Singapore. Commercial services for both licenses are due to commence on 1 April, 2000. StarHub intends to build a world-class, state-of-the-art integrated broadband info-communications network with leading edge technologies and flexible platforms. It will be principally fibre-based and will be capable of providing high speed digital capabilities to deliver innovative voice, data, mobility and multimedia services.

Nokia Telecommunications develops and manufactures infrastructure equipment and systems for fixed and mobile networks. Nokia's switching solutions and applications are built on the DX 200 switching platform, used in mobile and fixed applications alike. Nokia has delivered its DX 200 switching solutions to around 120 operators in over 30 countries.

With this co-operation, the number of operators to which Nokia supplies GSM technology increases to 76 operators in 37 countries. Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900.
