Nokia introduces a new mobile phone for the Japanese PDC standard

First in Japan, the new phone features the infrared data link and slide cover
Nokia has today announced a new mobile phone for the Japanese PDC market. The new product is the first mobile phone in Japan to have built-in infrared connectivity and a slide cover. The new product will be on display at COM JAPAN 1998 in Tokyo starting Tuesday, 10 November.
The new Nokia phone is compact, weighing only 92 grams, and it is specially designed for the Japanese market. It has the YO-BE-BA voice recognition function, which is also incorporated in the currently selling Nokia products in Japan. The phone is available in a range of colors, and it will be marketed through major operators in Japan starting in the first quarter of 1999.
"By introducing this innovative new phone, which enables high-quality wireless data communications, Nokia has created a new segment in the mobile phone market in Japan. We are confident that this product will be well received among the active business users," said Olav Stang, President, Nokia Mobile Communications K.K. Japan.
A built-in infrared port lets the user to send e-mail, files, phone numbers and calendar notes to PCs and other IrDA capable devices. The phonebook and the calendar can also be synchronized through the infrared port. The dynamic phonebook memory enables the user to save multiple entries, such as the office and home number, email address and a note for one person. The new PDC phone even includes three games and a calendar with a reminder function.
