Nokia delivers world's first ETSI standard ADSL and IP network to Telecom New Zealand
November 25, 1998

- First nationwide Broadband IP network in commercial operation

Telecom New Zealand and Nokia have signed a major agreement that marks the start of commercial delivery of broadband data services using the ADSL network.

Utilizing broadband network technology from Nokia, Telecom will offer an array of high-speed data services to business and residential customers as the service is progressively rolled out. This is one of the first end-to-end solutions in which IP network elements are seamlessly integrated with a broadband access network based on ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line).

As part of the agreement between the two companies, Nokia will supply its total broadband solution, including the Eksos broadband access solution, IP access servers, the Nokia Eksos R700 Remote Access Node as well as Customer Care and Billing solutions. Also included in the agreement, were IP network integration and state-of-the-art Network Management System (NMS). The Nokia Eksos solution supports a range of IP services such as remote working and high-speed Internet access.

"We see this as a major step forward in delivering fast Internet services" Barry Davey, General Manager Broadband, Telecom said. "With Nokia as our partner, Telecom will be able to introduce a broad range of high-speed data services that use the existing installed copper network, by utilising ADSL."

"This co-operation is a breakthrough agreement in the telecommunications industry, being one of the first commercial networks integrating broadband access and IP solutions in the same network," explains Mr. Kari Suneli, Senior Vice President, Fixed Access Systems, Nokia Telecommunications. "We are particularly pleased to be working with Telecom New Zealand, one of the most advanced operators in the global telecommunications market."

Telecom is the leading supplier of telecommunication services in New Zealand, one of the most open and deregulated telecommunication environments in the world. Telecom provides local, national and international telephone services and a wide range of other telecommunication services including cellular telecommunications, data communications, leased circuits, directories, paging and mobile radio.

Nokia access solutions provide operators with the tools to connect end users to network services. Nokia has already supplied access solutions to over forty countries worldwide and provides operators with a smooth migration into broadband IP services
