Nokia joins Global Mobile Suppliers Association
October 02, 1998

- Worldwide industry organisation to promote GSM

Nokia today announced the company has joined the Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) a new organisation established to strengthen promotion of the GSM standard worldwide.

The GSA was officially launched today at a ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland, with Nokia alongside 20 other founding members from across the telecommunications industry.

The organisation's key aims include the promotion of GSM products, systems and services in new and existing markets and the promotion of GSM network evolution to support third generation services. The GSA also intends to co-operate with, and complement other bodies working in the GSM field, including the GSM MoU Association, UMTS Forum, ETSI SMG and ECTEL TMS.

"Nokia will play an active role in GSA and we are pleased to be a founding member of this global industry organisation," says Olli Oittinen," Vice President, System Marketing and Sales, Radio Access Systems. "The growth of GSM has already been remarkable and we believe the GSA will be a good forum for the promotion and further strengthening of this platform." Mr Oittinen is also Nokia's representative on the GSA.

GSM is the world's most popular mobile phone standard with around 100 million subscribers in 120 countries using GSM phones. According to the GSM MoU Association, GSM now accounts for 38 per cent the world's total wireless market. The total number of users has already reached 250 million. The milestone of 100 million GSM customers was announced by the GSM MoU Association in July 1998.
Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission and switching as well as extensive services for building, efficiently operating and developing these networks. Having supplied GSM technology to 74 operators in 37 countries, Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900. Nokia is also the world's largest supplier of digital mobile phones

Nokia is a broad-scope communications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1997, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the NYSE (NOK.A), has sales in 130 countries and employs more than 41,000 people worldwide.
