Nokia installs 2000 base stations in 10 months for E2 network in Germany
October 05, 1998
Nokia has completed one of its fastest ever network roll-outs for the E2 mobile communications network in Germany. The fourth German mobile communications network went into operation on schedule at the beginning of October this year. This is a great success not only for the VIAG Interkom network operators, but also for Nokia - the company installed 2,000 base stations in 10 months.
In August 1997 VIAG Interkom contracted Nokia as the main supplier for the installation of a new GSM 1800 mobile communications network, an order in excess of DM 300 million.
Jürgen Peetz, Senior Account Manager at Nokia Telecommunications, believes that one of the reasons why they were able to complete the installation of the network on schedule, despite the tight deadlines was the excellent working relationship with VIAG Interkom: "The exceptional partnership and co-operation with VIAG Interkom was instrumental in helping us to complete the project on such a strict time schedule. We were able to discuss and plan the implementation well in advance."
The E2 network uses the enhanced full rate (EFR) codec developed by Nokia, providing high-quality voice communication in a mobile network, comparable to that with fixed networks. EFR is supported by all of the leading consumer equipment and infrastructure manufacturers.
Large urban areas such as Berlin, Leipzig, Nuremberg, Munich, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Cologne, Dortmund, Hannover and Hamburg have been connected to the E2 network. Further network expansions will be carried out by Nokia.
Medium-sized cities and the German autobahns are now being added to the E2 network. Given the speed at which Nokia is currently expanding the network, the company is on schedule with this roll-out phase too. With the help of a number of different subcontractors, Nokia's Customer Service Centre is now setting up approximately 300 new base stations each month.
VIAG Interkom GmbH & Co is a joint venture between the VIAG Aktiengesellschaft (45%), British Telecommunications PLC (45%) and the Norwegian Telenor AS (10%). VIAG Interkom's head office is located in Munich. With six branches and a customer service center in Nuremberg, the company is represented throughout Germany.
Nokia is a broad-scope communications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1997, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the NYSE (NOK.A), has sales in 130 countries and employs more than 41,000 people worldwide.
