Finnish Prime Minister Lipponen opens Nokia (He ping li) Industrial Park in China
October 26, 1998

Nokia is today celebrating the opening of its Hepingli Industrial Park in Beijing, China. The Finnish Prime Minister Lipponen, Vice Mayor Zhang Mao of Beijing Municipality, Jorma Ollila, President and CEO of Nokia and Chinese government officials are participating in the ribbon cutting ceremony.



The Nokia (Hepingli) Industrial Park concentrates on specific business competencies for Nokia in China. The complex consists mainly of an R&D centre, customer service centre, training center, offices for north region network systems sales and one of Nokia's joint ventures in Beijing, Beijing Nokia Hang Xing Telecommunications Systems Ltd (BNT). The Hepingli Industrial Park covers a total area of 20,000 sqm and houses around 500 Nokia empoyees at present.

"Beijing is a very important city for Nokia where we have already built Nokia's headquarters in China as well as two joint ventures. We believe this new Nokia (Hepingli) Industrial Park will provide an excellent environment for enhancing our competitiveness and being able to serve our customers efficiently, " comments Mr. Folke Ahlback, Senior Vice President, Nokia, China.

The BNT joint venture has expanded its business scope this year to manufacture mobile switches and base station controllers. Together with other Nokia joint ventures in China, Nokia is now able to produce total GSM systems in China. The R&D centere was established earlier this year and is active Specific areas for the research and development facility include technologies and concepts for future mobile communications, technologies for mobile terminals, including wireless data solutions, and advanced fixed access solutions.

With many technological innovations and industry firsts in China, Nokia is a leading supplier of mobile phones and network equipment to China´s demanding telecommunications market. Nokia has seven production sites in China, as well as a global R&D unit and offices nationwide, employing a total of around 3,000 people.
