Nokia launches a new solution capable of increasing network capacity ten-fold
October 26, 1998

For the Nokia High Capacity GSM System

Nokia today launches the new Nokia MetroSite capacity solution as part of the Nokia High Capacity GSM System. Launched at the PT/Expo Comm exhibition in Beijing, China, the new concept will enable operators to increase network capacity up to ten times that of conventional networks.

This total site solution is also designed to make high capacity affordable by cutting operators' total network costs by up to 50 per cent.

The complete Nokia MetroSite solution includes a high-capacity base station, a base station controller, a transmission node and two integrated radio options for cellular transmission. This new solution is intended for networks in areas of dense call traffic, such as business sectors, train or subway stations and shopping districts.

The Nokia MetroSite solution will also save operators time and money needed for site implementation, driving down costs throughout the network lifetime.

"Using revolutionary new access transmission at the 58 GHz frequency, this solution makes it possible to select sites virtually anywhere," says Olli Oittinen, Vice President, System Marketing and Sales, Radio Access Systems, Nokia Telecommunications. "With the Nokia MetroSite the total costs of building microcellular networks are significantly brought down."

The Nokia MetroSite Base Station is small and lightweight enough to be deployed in a variety of sites not normally considered with other systems - including billboards, bus stops and lamp posts - providing easier solutions for site aquisition. This compact base station operates on GSM 900, 1800, and 1900 frequencies and can be equipped with both GSM 900 and GSM 1800 transceivers for dual band networks.

Nokia MetroHopper Radio provides wireless access transmission between the base station controller and the base station using the 58 GHz frequency, a technology pioneered by Nokia. This enables operators to build dense sites and make a fast access connection to the base station, eliminating delays.

For applications requiring longer distances between transmission access points, the Nokia MetroSite solution also supports the recently introduced Nokia FlexiHopper Microwave Radio in the traditional 13 to 38 GHz range.

The Nokia MetroHub transmission node offers flexible network configuration capabilities that can instantly recover lost transmission connections. The Nokia MetroSite solution supports all current Nokia voice and data features as well as future software upgrades for General Packet Radio Service (GPRS).

Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission and switching as well as extensive services and network management solutions for building, efficiently operating and developing these networks. Having supplied GSM technology to 74 operators in 37 countries, Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900. The world's first GSM call was made through a Nokia network in 1991.

Nokia is the world's leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile and fixed telecom networks including related customer services. Nokia also supplies solutions and products for fixed and wireless datacom, as well as multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1997, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion (USD 9.8 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on five European Stock Exchanges and on the New York Stock Exchange (NOK.A), has sales in 130 countries and employs more than 42,000 people world-wide.
