Teracom, Senda and Nokia launch digital terrestial tv in Sweden
October 28, 1998
Today digital terrestrial TV has been soft-launched in Sweden. Broadcasts have already been launched in five test regions, and will be tested until the official launch on the 1st January 1999. Behind digital terrestrial TV in Sweden are Swedish national network operator Teracom, content administrator Senda, and digital set-top-box provider Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals.
As early as the 1st January 1999, the digital terrestrial network will cover half of the Swedish population, and can reach the equivalent of today's analogue network coverage within four years.
Starting from today, the content consists of ten digital channels of which one focuses only on interactive services. As more broadcast rights are distributed by the Swedish government, the amount of channels and interactive services in the network will increase to reach 30-45 within a few years.
To receive digital terrestrial broadcasts, the consumer does not have to exchange his old television set. All he needs is a digital set-top box to receive and decode the digital signals, as well as a smart card for decryption of the channels. Digital set-top boxes for terrestrial television will be available in limited quantities at the end of 1998, and to be distributed in volume in the beginning of 1999. A digital set-top box from Nokia will cost approximately SEK 5 000. The smart card can be rented for a yearly fee depending on the amount of channels chosen by the subscriber.
Nokia is the world's leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile and fixed telecom networks including related customer services. Nokia also supplies solutions and products for fixed and wireless datacom, as well as multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1997, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion (USD 9.8 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on five European Stock Exchanges and on the New York Stock Exchange (NOK.A), has sales in 130 countries and employs more than 42,000 people world-wide.
