PCS'98: Nokia Traffica Delivers Real-Time Traffic Monitoring for GSM 1900 Mobile Networks
September 23, 1998

ORLANDO, Fla. - Nokia today introduced to the Americas market a unique solution for network management -- Nokia Traffica, a real-time traffic monitoring tool. Nokia Traffica extracts real-time data from telecom traffic as it happens and presents it in easy-to-interpret graphs, unlocking a broad range of key data to wireless carriers. The tool allows carriers to see how the network is functioning, providing detail down to the individual call level.

Nokia Traffica works on information it receives on every call attempt made -- whether successful or unsuccessful -- through a Nokia Mobile Switching Center (MSC). Every call attempt immediately affects the real-time graphs, including attempts made when the line is busy or the call is not established.

Nokia Traffica allows user-definable configuration, so the operator can concentrate on call data passing through a specific MSC or monitor the entire network. It is also easy to add more Nokia Traffica units later if new MSCs are installed in the network.

"Traffica is the latest advancement in Nokia's on-going quest to enhance the capabilities and service quality of digital wireless networks," said Lance Cornish, marketing manager for network management systems of Nokia's infrastructure business in the Americas. "By opening a real-time window to the network, Nokia Traffica allows carriers to head-off trouble before it occurs and optimize reliability on each call, ensuring maximum uptime and revenue potential."

As a network analysis tool, Nokia Traffica can be used in basic operating modes: monitoring and troubleshooting. Nokia Traffica improves network monitoring by pinpointing and highlighting potential network traffic problems in real time. The operator can also access a variety of other data ; for example, how many international calls have been made and to which countries, as well as the call duration. It is also possible to monitor the amount and success of data traffic - an increasing factor in today's telecom traffic. And operators can define their own alarms and criteria to trigger the alarms, such as "amount of traffic dropped under each BSC."

Nokia Traffica also allows carriers to launch specific inquiries, particularly for troubleshooting. In the case of a service-level complaint, for example, the carrier may need to analyze a single phone call on a particular terminal made in the network. This level can be easily reached using Nokia Traffica, adding a new dimension to customer care for the carrier.

Nokia Traffica works seamlessly with Nokia's other network management products. In combination with Nokia NMS/2000, Traffica-generated alarms are automatically forwarded into the NMS/2000 for a holistic view of network functioning. In combination with Nokia Network Data Warehouse, with its range of Web-distributable post-processed reports, the carrier can now get the full picture on network operations -- from the infrastructure level to service management.

Nokia provides total GSM systems, including digital mobile phones, transmission and switching. Nokia holds the world's number one position in GSM 1800 networks and is one of the top two suppliers in GSM 900 networks. To date, Nokia GSM technology has been supplied to 74 operators in 37 countries.

Nokia is a broad-scope communications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1997, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the NYSE (NOK.A), has sales in 130 countries and employs more than 41,000 people worldwide.
