PCS'98: Nokia GSM Intranet Office sets workplace communications in motion
September 23, 1998

Technology from Nokia unit focusing on wireless solutions for corporate customers

ORLANDO, Fla. - Nokia today introduced to the Americas market the Nokia GSM Intranet Office (GIO), a combination of Internet Protocol (IP) telephony technology and field-proven GSM wireless systems that allows feature-rich, cost-effective mobile communications in corporate settings. The technology gives employees seamless mobility in the workplace via the company intranet. Using standard GSM phones and GSM base stations equipped with IP telephony technology, phone calls can be made via the intranet to mobile phones, fixed phones or PC terminals throughout an office. Outside the office, calls are routed through the public GSM network.

The Nokia GSM Intranet Office allows both the wireless phone and the corporate network to support advanced services such as a telephone directory, short messaging, multiparty services, data calls, call barring and call forwarding. The services operate with existing wireless phone technology and can be integrated at a highly cost-effective price.

"Business users represent a lucrative market segment, characterized by higher phone (or network) usage, reliable cash flow, higher liquidity and higher loyalty," said Mike Robinson, director of marketing for Nokia's infrastructure business in the Americas. "With the Nokia GSM Intranet Office, GSM 1900 carriers can benefit by offering a broader range of services targeted to the corporate sector and more closely focus on the needs of this relatively untapped market."

The convergence of telecommunications and data, together with the explosive growth of wireless, has created a new set of business communications needs. Nokia solutions such as the Nokia GSM Intranet Office are responses to increasing demand for new, cost-effective mobile solutions for the corporate environment.

Development of the Nokia GSM Intranet Office not only makes total employee mobility easier, but it can be achieved at a cost comparable to any cordless technology. Previously, companies were forced to carefully evaluate the value of total mobility in their business processes due to the higher cost of intra-office communications. With Nokia GSM Intranet Office, intra-office calls can be provided at very low cost. For business users, this means a quantum leap towards total employee mobility and reachability.

Nokia provides total GSM systems, including digital mobile phones, transmission and switching. Nokia holds the world's number one position in GSM 1800 networks and is one of the top two suppliers in GSM 900 networks. To date, Nokia GSM technology has been supplied to 74 operators in 37 countries.

Nokia is a broad-scope communications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1997, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the NYSE (NOK.A), has sales in 130 countries and employs more than 41,000 people worldwide.
