Nokia announces significant GSM milestones in China
September 28, 1998

As the popularity of GSM networks increases in China, the delivered subscriber line capacity on Nokia GSM 900 and GSM 1800 networks in China has broken the 10 million barrier.
This milestone in network capacity was reached after Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications Ltd. and Beijing Nokia Hang Xing Telecommunications Systems Ltd - two of Nokia's joint ventures in China - announced an agreement for a further expansion of the Beijing Telecom Administration (BTA) network in August.

Nokia is now also the first and only telecommunications company in China to have large scale manufacturing facilities for complete GSM networks including mobile switches, base station systems and cellular transmission.

"We are pleased Nokia has achieved these significant figures. During recent years we have managed to achieve a strong market position with GSM in China and Nokia now manufactures complete GSM systems in China. These milestones underline our efforts to continuously improve our ability to serve Chinese customers," says Folke Ahlbäck, Senior Vice President, Nokia, China.

GSM is the world's most popular mobile phone standard with around 100 million people in 120 countries using GSM phones. GSM now accounts for 38 per cent the world's total wireless market and the number of users is expected to exceed 250 million by the end of year 2000. The milestone of 100 million GSM customers was announced by the GSM MoU Association in July 1998.

Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission and switching as well as extensive services for building, efficiently operating and developing these networks. Having supplied GSM technology to 74 operators in 37 countries, Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900.

Nokia is a broad-scope communications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1997, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the NYSE (NOK.A), has sales in 130 countries and employs more than 41,000 people worldwide.
