Nokia, ChongQing TB and ChongQing PTAC form new joint venture in China
September 29, 1998

Nokia, ChongQing Telecommunications Bureau and ChongQing PTAC have today signed an agreement for the establishment of a new joint venture in China, ChongQing Nokia Telecommunications Ltd.

Responding to the growing need for services provided by high-quality access networks, ChongQing Nokia Telecommunications Ltd will be providing a full range of services and will manufacture and supply products for fixed networks, including the Nokia Eksos access node. The factory will begin production in 1999.

"As part of our continuous investment plans in China, this is a major step towards supplying advanced access networks to telecom operators," comments Folke Ahlbäck, Senior Vice President, Nokia, China. "This joint venture complements Nokia´s R&D and production of fixed network equipment already present in China. Its leading edge technology will enhance our capability to serve our customers in China."

Nokia has established itself as a leading supplier of equipment for fixed and mobile telecommunications networks in China. Nokia has seven production plants and a network of regional offices in China, employing almost 3,000 people.

The trend in access networks is towards the provision of competitive high-quality services and higher bandwidth services. Global specifications have been implemented to standardise access networks, ensuring network flexibility and vendor independence. The majority of countries, including China, have chosen V5 as their nationwide open interface standard for building access networks.

Nokia's access solutions provide operators with the tools to connect end users to new network services. Nokia has already supplied access solutions to over forty countries worldwide and provides operators with a smooth migration into broadband services. Nokia's long experience in transmission has been instrumental in developing the ability to design and implement integrated, cost-efficient solutions.

Notes to Editors:

Nokia Eksos is a solution including both V5-based access and ATM over xDSL broadband access. The Eksos N, a narrowband solution, is based on the standardised V5 open interface, allowing the free combination of POTS, ISDN and data in the same node. The broadband access node, Eksos B, provides operators with the possibility to deliver broadband services, including high-speed Internet access for business and residential customers. The Eksos B is based on ADSL technology. The Eksos family also includes a range of xDSL network terminals under the name Eksos M.

Nokia is a broad-scope communications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1997, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the NYSE (NOK.A), has sales in 130 countries and employs more than 41,000 people worldwide.
