Nokia takes leadership in smart car telematics solutions
September 08, 1998
Nokia today announced that it aims to maintain global leadership in intelligent telematics solutions, a new emerging business area, which is expected to experience major growth in the next few years. First Nokia-developed car telematics products will be available in the vehicles of several leading manufacturers during next year.
Nokia founded its Smart Traffic Products unit with the aim of broadening the scope of its wireless business. Since 1996, Nokia Smart Traffic Products has been developing mobile communication and information solutions for the automotive industry, based on GSM, GPS and Internet technologies. The goal is to provide useful services and applications by combining existing technologies and expanding leading-edge expertise, connecting the car to the external environment.
Two-way wireless communication enables a number of innovative applications. In addition to voice communication, these include safety and security applications (such as automatic and manual emergency calls, road-side assistance, traffic information), dynamic route guidance and many others. Nokia's products portfolio in car telematics ranges from the current integrated handportables, special accessories and fixed phones to customised telematics units. The equipment is integrated to the vehicles at the manufacturing plant as line-fit.
- Cellular-based telematics solutions have many advantages: the existing GSM network infrastructure with wide territorial coverage can be used, the car terminal cost will be affordable enough to trigger volume demand, and the broad range of services will be based on real-time information. For the vehicle manufacturers, telematics is a means to differentiate and enhance customer loyalty. For the consumers, car telematics solutions offer security and safety, reliability, convenience of use, entertainment and time savings, said Kalevi Kaartinen, Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Smart Traffic Products.
- Every year, approximately 50 million vehicles are sold. At the same time, there are increasing needs to communicate and connect the car to the outside world. The vehicle industry is moving from the current fixed GSM mobile solutions to telematics products and services, which will soon be ready for volume introduction. Nokia can take advantage of its in-house expertise in the car telematics. Our goal is to be the global leader also in this market. We cooperate closely with our customers to develop innovative solutions for smart cars, stated Kaartinen.
Nokia was the first company in the world to introduce a fixed GSM mobile, the Nokia 6050, for the automotive use. Currently Nokia Smart Traffic Products has manufacturing and R & D units in Finland and Germany, with several hundred employees.
