Nokia Sponsors Snowboard World Cup
September 30, 1998
- Nokia has become the long term title sponsor for the FIS Snowboard World Cup. International Ski Federation (FIS) and Nokia have signed a three-year sponsorship agreement, which gives high visibility to Nokia in the 78 events around Europe, USA, Canada and Japan in the 1998-1999 season. The Nokia Snowboard FIS World Cup tour starts on 14 November in Kaprun, Austria, and finishes on 14 March in Olang, Italy. Athletes from more than 25 countries are expected to take part in the world cup.
"Snowboarding and Nokia share the same values. Snowboarding is about creativity, freedom and individuality. Snowboarders take challenges and do things differently. It is a young and growing sport with a strong visual appeal. Snowboarding is associated with colorful images and open-minded people that have a lot of positive energy. We are looking forward to having this opportunity to work with them on a long term basis," said Anssi Vanjoki, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe and Africa.
"FIS is extremely excited to work with such a cutting edge company as Nokia," said Gian Franco Kasper, FIS newly elected President. "It's always nice to team up a snow sport and a sponsor that have so much in common. Nokia has been applauded for its new, creative and innovative approach within the mobile phone industry and snowboarding shares the same enthusiasm on snow. Together, I'm sure we'll draw attention around the world as we move forward with our commitment to develop snowboarding."
In just over a decade, snowboarding has become one of the most popular winter sports in the world. The roots of snowboarding can be traced back to southern Californian surfers looking for thrills away from the beaches. Today snowboarding is much more than just a sport. It is a lifestyle and has an ambience of its own. The snowboarding culture affects millions of participants and fans, from the clothes they wear to the music they listen to.
The Nokia Snowboard FIS World Cup consists of Halfpipe, Parallel Slalom and Snowboard Cross. Additionally, a fourth World Cup title will be given to the winner of the combination Giant Slalom, Super-G and Parallel Giant Slalom. The title of the World Cup Overall Champion will go to the athlete with the best average of the two diciplines.
