August 19, 1998

Nokia and Oulun Puhelin Oy have signed an agreement for the delivery of a complete GSM 1800 network to Oulun Puhelin telephone company in Oulu, Northern Finland.

Nokia will deliver mobile switching equipment and a base station system to Oulun Puhelin. The equipment will be used to build a GSM 1800 city network in the city of Oulu and the surrounding area.

"We have tested the GSM based Nokia DAXnode 5000 WLL-solution for wireless telephone services, and decided to build a complete GSM 1800 network. We chose Nokia based on the good experience achieved so far. It is important for us to be involved in the growing wireless telecommunications market and development of transport technologies. The new city phone brings mobile telecommunications services to our customers at a reasonable price" says Mr. Risto Siivola, Managing Director, Oulun Puhelin Oy.

"Nokia and Oulun Puhelin have done co-operation for a long time, and we are happy to continue this co-operation now as a supplier of a GSM 1800 network", comments Mr. Juhani Koivula, Nokia Telecommunications Area General Manager for Finland and Baltic countries. "Nokia's GSM 1800 technology will bring to the customers of Oulun Puhelin a range of advanced GSM services, such as short messaging, and the range of services can easily be expanded."
