Nokia rings in India's 51st year of Independence with special Indian Edition of the Nokia 5110 phone

Nokia today launched a special Indian edition of the new Nokia 5110 as a tribute to the nation as it enters its 51st year of independence. Specially created for the Indian market, the new phone features a rendition of the immortal tune "Saare Jahaan Se Achhaa" as a ringing tone.
The tune has been specially adapted by Pandit Ravi Shankar from his original composition for the Nokia 5110. "I am so happy that Nokia is using the tune which I gave 53 years ago to the song 'Saare Jahaan Se Achhaa'. This is my tribute to the nation," the world-renowned musician/said in a personal message recorded at his California residence for the occasion.
The Nokia 5110 highlights Nokia's commitment to the values of individuality, innovation, ease of use and the human touch. "The 'Saare Jahaan Se Achhaa' ringing tone gives Indian users the opportunity to celebrate the occasion and express themselves in a unique fashion. The Nokia 5110 is the first mobile phone that allows users to change the colour of their phone to suit any occasion, thanks to the unique user-changeable Xpress-OnTM colour covers. Customers who buy the phone during the launch phase will be given a limited edition Xpress-OnTM Freedom Colour Cover absolutely free while stocks last.
The launch of the special Indian edition of the Nokia 5110 was commemorated by a simple ceremony at which Nokia 5110 phones were presented to three outstanding veterans by the Chief Guest, Shrimati Sushma Swaraj, Honourable Minister for Communications and Information & Broadcasting, in appreciation of their contribution to India's journey towards independence.
Nokia also announced that every Nokia 5110 phone sold in India between August 15 and November 14, 1998 will be helping to contribute towards a donation to assist the vital work of Child Relief and You (CRY) in India. "Nokia is committed to enhancing the quality of people's lives in India not just through relevant and innovative products and solutions. As we seek also to enrich and improve people's lives in meaningful ways, we are especially pleased to be able to work in partnership with CRY to bring assistance to children in need," said Parikshit Bhasin.
The Nokia 5110 is a stylish phone that is incredibly easy to use and has a great variety of exciting features and excellent performance. It weighs only 143 grams with the slim battery. It features true 3 Volt Technology for up to 5 hours talk time and 11 days (270 hours) standby time with the standard battery. It also supports the Enhanced Full Rate (EFR) voice codec for improved voice quality.
The user interface is easily accessed with the Nokia Navi Key, an innovation trademarked and owned by Nokia. The phone features include a quick alert key, 30 ringing tones, full data capabilities, calculator and three games: Snake, Logic and Memory.
