North-West GSM continues with Nokia for network expansion in St Petersburg, Russia

North-West GSM has selected Nokia for the expansion of its GSM 900 network in St Petersburg, Russia. With this agreement, Nokia will continue as the sole supplier for the network and deliveries will begin immediately.
Nokia will supply its high capacity Mobile Switching technology (MSC), Base Stations (BTS), Base Station Controllers (BSC) and microwave radio equipment. Nokia will also provide customer services including implementation and training.
"Nokia's GSM system, launched in 1995, has provided us the flexibility and capacity necessary for serving our rapidly growing network. Today we have almost 90,000 customers and this continuing co-operation will ensure further growth," says Mr Alexander Nyago, General Manager of North-West GSM.
"North-West GSM is one of the fastest growing companies in Russia's mobile communications market," comments Mr Veli Laine, Area General Manager, Nokia Telecommunications. "The capabilities of GSM, as a platform for wireless data solutions such as short messaging, enable North-West GSM to offer advanced services to their subscribers, many of which are unique in Russia."
North-West GSM provides digital network services to subscribers in St. Petersburg area and North-West region of Russia. The shareholders are Telecominvest and Lensviaz from Russia and Sonera, Telenor Invest AS and Telia International AB from the Nordic countries. The first call in North-West GSMīs network was made in December 1994.
