Nokia and CMG to Establish Co-operation on the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Technology
August 03, 1998
Nokia and CMG Telecommunications today signed a licensing and support agreement for software implementation of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) technology. Nokia will license to CMG the software for the WAP technology which will be integrated into CMG's products. Based on the common WAP specification Nokia has developed the WAP implementation server that will be integrated into CMG's Value Added Services Platform (VASP™).
Nokia Mobile Phones and CMG have also signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding co-operation in the development of the WAP and value added services. The combination of service platforms from CMG, the open WAP technology and WAP mobile phones will create new business opportunities for operators and service providers worldwide.
Nokia and CMG will combine their experience in the development of wireless value added services to provide vendor-independent solutions based on the WAP technology. The companies intend to jointly explore further possibilities for value added services utilising the WAP technology in their products.
"CMG and Nokia Mobile Phones have previously worked together on wireless value-added services. This has for example resulted in the Dutch KPN's innovative and succesful EasyMail service. Nokia highly regards CMG's expertise in messaging and value added service solutions. We are pleased to formalise our co-operation with CMG to use the WAP technology as an enabler of even more innovative and better services for the end-users", notes Soren Petersen , Vice President, Global Product Line Management, Nokia Mobile Phones.
"WAP will be the standard for bringing the Internet content and other value added services to wireless networks and mobile phones. Nokia has developed its WAP implementation software based on the common WAP specification 1.0. We are proud to start the licensing activities of our implementation software with CMG, who is a major player in the field of value-added services. We believe that CMG with their WAP compatible products will significantly contribute to the development of a global market for new value added service applications", says Pertti Lounamaa, Vice President, Nokia Wireless Software Solutions.
"Our Value Added Service Platform (VASP) is ideally suited for creating high performance and scalable WAP server nodes in cellular networks"; says Peter Maathuis, Managing Director of CMG Telecommunications. "WAP will be a key enabler for mobile value added services in the coming years. As a consequence, CMG will also WAP-enable its existing VASP service application portfolio, which includes an Internet Gateway, Information Retrieval Services, Over The Air Services and Smart Mobile Gateway applications. WAP fits perfectly in CMG's service creation and service management architecture that allows operators and content providers to create new services. It opens up existing Internet services to mobile users with a very short time-to-market. CMG's leading position in the SMS (Short Message Services) and value added services product markets and our proven track-record as systems integrator and applications builder put us in a unique position to assist operators to enable their networks for WAP."
