Nokia and MobileOne sign GSM 900 expansion contract in Singapore
July 27, 1998

MobileOne and Nokia have signed an agreement for the fifth expansion of MobileOne's GSM network in Singapore. This expansion will now allow the GSM 900 network to support over 300,000 customers. The total value of the expansion work is close to USD 30 million.

With this contract Nokia will deliver its high capacity DX200 mobile switching equipment (MSC), several large capacity base station controllers (BSCs), an additional home location register (HLR) and Nokia macro and indoor base stations (BTS). Nokia will also supply its Switching Cross Connect system (SXCT) and SXCT test bed for MobileOne's new Main Operating Centre in Jurong, Singapore.

Under the current expansion, MobileOne will be using Nokia's Intelligent Network (IN) solutions to provide advanced GSM services such as Virtual Private Networks (VPN's) and pre-paid airtime to corporate and consumer customers. With the increase of data usage over GSM networks, MobileOne is also introducing High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) to allow dramatic increases in data speeds of up to 57.6kps. This would provide a dramatic increase of capacity than at the 9.6kps currently available in most other networks.

"This latest investment allows us to increase capacity and at the same time, incorporate the most advanced cellular technology currently available into our system," says Neil Montefiore, MobileOne's Chief Executive Officer. "By doing so, we stay ahead of technology changes and customer numbers. Our customers will benefit from a network that constantly maintains its high quality and reliability and can offer a continuous range of new and innovative services to meet their mobile telephony needs."

"For Nokia this contract is of major significance, since it reinforces our position as one of the leading suppliers of GSM cellular systems in Singapore," explains Antti Raikkönen, Managing Director of Nokia Pte Ltd., Nokia Telecommunications. "MobileOne has done a fantastic job in building its network, having grown to over 200,000 GSM subscribers in its first year of operation. With this rapid expansion it places pressure on a supplier to maintain the quality and service of the network at the high levels customers have come to expect. We at Nokia are incredibly proud that MobileOne has the confidence in Nokia to again select us as their sole GSM supplier."

MobileOne, Singapore's newest mobile and paging service provider, is a consortium of the Keppel Group, Singapore Press Holdings, Cable & Wireless and Hong Kong Telecom.

Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission and switching. Having supplied GSM technology to 72 operators in 36 countries, Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900.

Nokia is a broad-scope communications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, wireless data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors. In 1997, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the NYSE (NOK.A), has sales in 130 countries and employs more than 41,000 people worldwide.
