Nokia and Globe Telecom sign expansion agreement in the Philippines
July 20, 1998

Globe Telecom and Nokia have signed a contract for the phase five expansion of Globe Telecom's Handyphone service, the Company's Mobile Telephone System (CMTS), based on GSM. The value of the contract is approximately USD 25 million.

Nokia will expand Globe's GSM 900 services and quality of the network in the Metro Manila area, with work scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

Under the agreement, Nokia will supply a full range of telecommunications services, from site acquisition to network integration. Equipment to be supplied includes Base Station Controllers, Base Stations and the Nokia Network Management System. Earlier this year Nokia supplied Globe with a Mobile Switch, Mobile Switching expansion, a Home Location Register, as well as a complete Intelligent Network platform, which is now in service with Globe's prepaid plus service.

"The continued addition of Nokia's leading cellular technology into our system will now allow Globe Telecom to offer the best network coverage, with the most competitive, high-quality and flexible service portfolio for our customers," said Manuel De Los Santos, Globe Telecom Senior Vice President for Mobile Services.

"This continuation of cooperation with Globe Telecom will strengthen our position in the fast-growing market in the Philippines," says Claus Karthe, President of Nokia Telecommunications (Philippines) Inc.

Globe Telecom, a Philippine corporation led by the Ayala Corporation and Singapore Telecom International, is one of only three full service telecommunications companies in the country today. The company offers a comprehensive range of telecom products and services which include a nationwide fully-digital cellular mobile phone service based on GSM, fixed telephony, international telephone services, VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminals), Inter Exchange Carrier (IXC) services, data communications and other value added services such as G-Net internet access.

Nokia offers total GSM systems, with everything from digital mobile phones to transmission and switching. Having supplied GSM technology to 72 operators in 36 countries, Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a broad-scope telecommunications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors. With sales in 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion) in 1997. Nokia, listed on NYSE (NOK.A), employs more than 38,000 people worldwide.
