Nokia in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi
July 13, 1998

Nokia has entered into a partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. The partnership will see Nokia sponsoring Indian students in IIT's Master of Technology programme on "VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration): Design, Tools, and Technology (VDTT)".

As part of the programme, Nokia's VLSI experts at the Nokia Research Center in Bochum, Germany will instruct students during the six month-long project, as part of their studies. To complete the Master of Technology programme requires 18 months of full-time study. Through this partnership, Nokia is now committed to working with the IIT for the next three years.

"The VDTT program is seen as an excellent match with Nokia Research Center's aims towards foundry-independent cell library. Nokia is now re-vitalizing long ties with IIT Delhi in preparation for deeper cooperation. With this sponsorship program, we intend to support IIT Delhi in meeting the demanding requirements of leading telecommunications companies and for us this creates interesting possibilities in broadening our activities in India", comments Simo Luiro, Manager of International Cooperation, Nokia Research Center.

With this cooperation Nokia is now exploring India's outstanding market of leading researchers and developers. Nokia has already shown its commitment to co-operation and integration of Indian R&D, having conducted research projects in co-operation with the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. Additionally, Nokia currently subcontracts software from leading Indian software houses. In India, Nokia operates as an Indian enterprise utilizing the highly skilled local professional talent.

IIT Delhi is one of the six Institutes of Technology, created as centres of excellence for higher education; offering advanced research and development in the areas of science, engineering, and technology. The institute's activities encompass thirteen academic departments and nine centres of research in various disciplines of engineering and science.
