Nokia acquires Matra Nortel Communications' GSM Terminals R&D unit in Ulm, Germany

The acquisition strengthens Nokia's leading position in the development of Smart Traffic Products

Nokia today announced that it has bought the GSM Terminals Research and Development unit of Matra Nortel Communications. The unit, located in Ulm, Southern Germany, will join Nokia and concentrate its efforts on the development of Nokia's Smart Traffic Products. It will continue to operate in Ulm and work in close cooperation with Nokia's other Smart Traffic Products and mobile phone R&D centers.

Nokia Smart Traffic Products develops telecommunications -driven telematics solutions for road vehicles. The products combine Nokia's expertise in mobile phone networks, terminals and wireless data products. The Smart Traffic Terminal is incorporated in the car, and can provide the user with traffic information and navigation, automated emergency functions, in-car security and car maintenance functions. The system is based on the existing GSM infrastructure and the GPS navigation. The first Smart Traffic solutions will be expected during 1999.
