Nokia to supply fifth GSM network expansion to Yunnan PTA

In a contract valued at around USD 150 million, Yunnan Post and Telecommunications Adminstration (PTA) in China have selected Nokia to provide the fifth expansion to its GSM 900 network. Deliveries will begin in summer, and the network expansion will be operational by spring 1999.
Nokia will deliver high-capacity mobile switching centres (MSC) including transit switches, home location registers (HLR), base station controllers and base stations to Yunnan PTA. Nokia will also provide network management solutions, as well as supplying services, including installation, network planning & optimization, technical support and training. The expansion will include both outdoor and indoor base station solutions.
Following the expansion, Yunnan PTA's network capacity will rise to over one million subscribers. "Nokia and Yunnan PTA began cooperation in 1996. The pioneering work has proved very successful and we are pleased to continue building this high-capacity, high-quality network," states Mr Folke Ahlbäck, Senior Vice President, Nokia, Greater China.
