Nokia Research Center teams up with Delft University of Technology
June 12, 1998
A framework agreement between Nokia Research Center, the Nokia Group's corporate research unit, and Delft University of Technology has been signed in the Netherlands to increase mutual research cooperation. Nokia Research Center will also become a Full Member of the university's International Research Centre for Telecommunications-transmission and Radar (IRCTR).
"Delft University of Technology is one of Europe's largest and most progressive technical universities. We have long worked in cooperation with it in various wireless communications projects. Based on our positive experiences, we are pleased that we can intensify our joint efforts," notes Juhani Kuusi, Head of Nokia Research Center.
Through Full Membership, Nokia Research Center gains a seat on the IRCTR Industrial Advisory Board and can influence Delft University of Technology's training and research work in wireless telecommunications. Membership also guarantees Nokia access to IRCTR's research results. The University, on the other hand will be able to make use of Nokia's know-how in the area of central problematics of wireless telecommunications to help focus and intensify its research activity.
The cooperation further strengthens Nokia Research Center's connections to global university research work. Nokia has long been involved in research cooperation with international universities in several countries.
After the three-year framework agreement signed with Delft University of Technology, the parties can extend it for a year at a time. One of the first results of the increased cooperation is a book entitled "Wideband CDMA for Third Generation Mobile Communications", written by Delft University of Technology Professor Ramjee Prasad and Nokia Research Center Researcher Tero Ojanperä. Published by Artech House, the book will be available in September.
IRCTR, established in 1994, is an international research centre working under the auspices of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at Delft University of Technology. Its major focus areas include antennas and propagation, radar technology, radio and broadband telecommunications-transmission, and remote sensing. Considering the multi-disciplinary activities in the field of wireless personal communications, IRCTR has recently established an expert centre, Centre for Wireless Personal Communications (CEWPC). To concentrate research at the topics IRCTR cooperates with companies, universities and research institutes.
Nokia Research Center´s task is to enhance Nokia´s technological competitiveness. It explores and develops technologies in areas crucial to the company´s success, such as mobile and fixed telecommunications, audio-visual signal processing, software and electronics. Its main focuses include GSM enhancement and third-generation cellular systems, broadband communications and multimedia. The units of Nokia Research Center are located in Helsinki and Tampere in Finland, in Dallas and Boston in the US, in Bochum in Germany, in Budapest in Hungary, and in Tokyo in Japan.
Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a broad-scope telecommunications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and PC monitors. With sales in 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion) in 1997. Nokia, listed on NYSE (NOK.A), employs more than 38,000 people worldwide.
