Nokia and Finnish Ministry of the Interior sign frame agreement for TETRA mobile radios
June 10, 1998

Nokia and the Finnish Ministry of the Interior have signed a frame agreement for the general delivery conditions of Nokia TETRA radio terminals and accessories for Finland´s authority network known as VIRVE. Different user groups of VIRVE can order Nokia's radio terminals according these frame agreement conditions.

In December 1997 Nokia and the Finnish Ministry of the Interior signed an agreement for the supply of the digital TETRA network. Equipment deliveries for the initial network phase have already begun and the network will have a nationwide coverage by the end of the year 2002. In addition to the TETRA network facilities and equipment, Nokia has provided several types of handportables, which will meet the needs of the even more demanding user groups, such as police and emergency rescue services.

Nokia TETRA handportables have an easy to use a menu display and the most commonly needed functions have their own keys. Different radios can also be chosen for different needs. The extensive selection of accessories adds to the versatility of the handportables.

TETRA handportable radios have to be able to stand heavy field use. Core qualities of the radio include its mechanic durability, a long operating life, reliability and user friendliness.

Nokia offers total TETRA systems with everything from terminals to dispatching workstations, base stations and switching. Nokia is also a leading supplier of MPT 1327 based analogue trunked mobile radio system with deliveries to over 30 countries in Europe, Asia and Australia.

Notes to Editors:

TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) is a standard of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). It this the first and only open international digital standard approved by the ETSI, that has been planned for demanding user groups of mobile radio services, like the authorities. A great amount of European user organisations and manufacturers have participated in the defining of the standard. The estimated amount of TETRA users by the year 2010 is 10 million.

In March 1998, Nokia signed a contract with Dolphin Telecommunications for the delivery of the world's first nationwide commercial Tetra network for Great Britain. TETRA customers include Helsinki City Energy Company, ElTele Öst of Norway and TeleDanmark. In Britain, Nokia is also participating in the Quadrant Consortium, which is designing and planning the new digital radio service for use by all the country's emergency services.
