Nokia to supply STM-16 SDH transmission equipment to Eesti Mobiiltelefon, Estonia
June 10, 1998

Eesti Mobiiltelefon, the leading mobile operator in Estonia, has selected the Nokia SYNFONET STM-16 SDH system to expand its existing transmission network. This solution will enable Eesti Mobiiltelefon to build their own, high-capacity, transmission network in the Tallinn area of Estonia. Nokia is the sole supplier to Eesti Mobiiltelefon for fixed transmission equipment. Nokia and EMT have worked successfully together since 1993. This network extension is operational since May this year.

Nokia will supply its SYNFONET STM-16 system to Eesti Mobiiltelefon, plus upgrades to the existing network management system, the Nokia NMS/10. Additionally, Nokia will provide customer services such as installation and training plus technical support. This network extension makes EMT a frontrunner in the deployment of STM-16 equipment in a mobile network.

The existing STM-1 network has formed the first phase of the network and, thanks to the modularity of the solution, it will be expanded cost-effectively and smoothly to STM-16 capacity.

"We have been happy with the performance of the Nokia SYNFONET STM-1 equipment which we have been using in our network," states Mr Grünberg, Technical Director of Eesti Mobiiltelefon. "As the amount of mobile traffic is increasing rapidly in Estonia, we now need to build transmission network, which provides high capacity and functionality. We particularly value the possibility of being able to take full advantage of our existing network, spending less money for the new high-capacity network part."

"The Nokia SYNFONET solution is ideal for a network such as that of Eesti Mobiiltelefon," comments Mr Vesa Tykkyläinen, Vice President, System Marketing and Sales, Fixed Access Systems, Nokia. "It provides the optimised way of network building for each network phase, the initial STM-1 network and now the easy upgrade to the higher STM-16 capacity. The detailed future development of the network is not necessary now, as SYNFONET can answer to further upcoming needs in the same optimised way, whatever they are in service, capacity or coverage."

Nokia's SDH product family, SYNFONET, provides the telecommunications operator with a total SDH concept for access and transport networks, incorporated under a full network management system, Nokia NMS. The Nokia SYNFONET enables the operator to build their network in a cost-efficient and optimised way, taking into account all future needs such as broadband applications and future optical layering. For mobile operators who are building their transmission network, Nokia SYNFONET provides beneficial features, including retiming and integrated 64kbit/s cross-connection, ensuring a high service quality. Nokia's SDH technology has been supplied to close 80 customers in over 20 countries.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a broad-scope telecommunications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors. With sales in 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion) in 1997. Nokia, listed on NYSE (NOK.A), employs more than 38,000 people worldwide.
