Nokia chooses Mjärdevi Science Park in Linköping
June 08, 1998
Nokia will establish a competence center in Mjärdevi Science Park in 1999 in Linköping, Sweden, which gives the company a potential to expand to up to 120 employees.
In the competence center, Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals will develop software for its interactive terminal, the so-called Set-top box which makes it possible to view digital -TV and to link up to the Internet via the TV set. Currently, Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals has a unit in Motala, where 170 persons are employed with the development of software and hardware, product management, logistics, procurement and administration. The company's establishment in Mjärdevi Science Park does not affect employment in Motala.
"We selected the Mjärdevi Science Park which, in Sweden and abroad, is viewed as a very favorable environment for research and business operations in high technology," explains Owe Törnqvist, President of Nokia Satellite Systems AB, a unit within Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals. "The dynamic environment - Mjärdevi Science Park is one of the world's fastest growing technology parks - and the proximity to Linköping University are very important. Being able to recruit qualified software engineers and to cooperate with the University in projects is of great importance."
The company will move into newly constructed premises managed by the community owned real estate company Sankt Kors Fastighets AB. "The new building provides 5,000 m2 of office space, of which Nokia Multimedia Network Terminals will lease half," says Ronny Mårtensson, President of Sankt Kors Fastighets AB. "We have tenants for the other half of the building and have begun plans for another building in Mjärdevi Science Park."
"Naturally, we are very pleased that Nokia chose to establish its new competence center in Mjärdevi Science Park. A major corporation such as Nokia is highly significant for the future development of the technology park," says Sten-Gunnar Johansson, President of Mjärdevi Science Park. "Today, we have everything from one-man firms to major international corporations at Mjärdevi and most of the companies are world-class in their industries."
