The new Nokia Remote Access Node
June 08, 1998

for scalable broadband service deployment in the Internet

With the rapid growth of the Internet and the transmission of large amounts of data in the access network, operators must avoid any possible bottlenecks in the network and optimise the resources available. At CommunicAsia 98, Nokia introduces the Nokia Remote Access Node (RAN), a product capable of intelligently managing large amounts of high-speed Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL) and other data subscriber lines connected to different Internet Service Provider (ISP) networks.

The Nokia RAN is a high-density, highly intelligent networking product bridging the operating gap between network operators' DSL equipment and Internet Service Provider (ISP) backbone routers. The Nokia RAN is suitable for deployment by network operators in regional networks or by Internet Service Providers at the point-of-presence (POP). The Nokia RAN is based on technology developed by Redback Networks, a California based company.

"The Nokia Remote Access Node complements Nokia's Internet offering by adding intelligence to the critical part of the network. This equals easier use of the Internet subscription for end-users and the network operators using this technology have a more flexible means of providing services," says Mr Jussi Ilmarinen, Vice President, IP Networking, Nokia Telecommunications.

Nokia RAN offers sophisticated ways of sharing resources allocated in the network infrastructure among large numbers of end-users. With Nokia RAN, end-users will be able to dynamically switch between work-at-home and general Internet access, using the same network service.

Redback Networks Inc, was founded in 1996 and is headquartered in Sunnyvale Calif. RedBack Networks develops networking solutions for the next generation of Internet services.

Nokia's access solutions provide operators with the tools to connect end-users to network services. Nokia's long experience in transmission has been instrumental in developing the ability to design and implement integrated, cost-efficient solutions.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a broad-scope telecommunications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors. With sales in 130 countries, net sales totalled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion) in 1997. Nokia, listed on NYSE (NOK.A), employs more than 38,000 people worldwide.

Note to editors:

Nokia RAN accepts a high concentration of data traffic from many DSL Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs and then applies scalable user configuration and management). It grooms the traffic to reduce the heavy processing load for backbone routers which can limit the scalability of high-speed networks. The Nokia RAN receives cell- or frame- based end-user traffic from the DSLAM and sends the aggregated IP traffic to Internet Service Provider backbone routers over Fast Ethernet, frame relay, ATM, or tunnelled IP connections.
