High-Speed Data means business today
June 02, 1998

With the new Nokia BSS7 software

Using High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD) technology, the new Nokia BSS7 (Base Station Subsystem) software release, introduced at CommunicAsia 98, provides high-speed data functionality in GSM networks without any base station hardware modifications. This software solution boosts data speed from the current 9.6 kbit/s to 14.4 kbit/s. Wireless data is an increasingly important focus for GSM operators and the ability to meet growing customer demands for high-quality mobile data service requires faster data speeds; enabled by the new Nokia BSS7 software release.

The 14.4 kbit/s data rate possible with the BSS7 release can be used in a single traffic channel to increase the speed of existing data services by 50%. Furthermore, by multiplexing up to four channels into a single time slot, operators will soon be able to offer uncompressed data rates up to 57.6 kbit/s - six times faster than currently available.

The HSCSD feature is ideal for applications requiring constant bitrate and minimal transmission delay, such as videoconferencing, electronic mail, remote file transfer and wireless imaging. And as new data applications continue to emerge, an operator's competitive advantage will depend on being first to market with these applications. High-speed data is a key building block in the evolution bridge to General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) and third generation mobile multimedia technology.

"The need for mobile data is already well established in the business market," notes Mr Mika Vehviläinen, Senior Vice President, Network Systems, Nokia Telecommunications. "As lifestyle patterns change, blurring the line between professional and private life, more subscribers expect seamless service for both voice and data."

To take advantage of high-speed data today, the new Nokia 9110 Communicator supports the single-channel 14.4 kbit/s data rate. In addition to providing in a single unit existing data services (Internet access, electronic mail, fax and short messages), calendar functions and GSM phone, the Nokia 9110 Communicator offers the industry's first commercial wireless imaging capabilities. This compact mobile office and phone will be available for GSM 900 markets during the third quarter of this year.

To facilitate the implementation of high-speed data services, the Nokia Artus Access Router supports the 14.4 kbit/s data rate today, with higher speeds planned to be available later this year. The Nokia Artus Access Router gives operators the possibility to connect GSM Circuit Switched Data directly to the local area network (LAN), internet or intranet, providing fast set-up time and reliable connection.

All Nokia base stations are fully compatible with the high-speed data feature, which will be available with the Nokia BSS7 software release. Nokia expects operators to have commercial HSCSD services in place by early 1999.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a broad-scope telecommunications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors.
