Kymi Telephone Company, Finland selects the Nokia Easywave Access solution
May 28, 1998

Nokia will supply its GSM-based Easywave Access network to the Kymi Telephone Company, a regional telecommunications company in eastern Finland. Using this technology, the Kymi Telephone Company will launch a local mobility service where the subscriber uses a standard GSM 1800 handset covering the Kotka City centre area. Corporate users benefit from this service by being reachable everywhere on site - not only at their desks.

"With Nokia's solution we can offer mobility to our customers without investing into a mobile network with full coverage. We can make use of our fixed switch and only build the required base station network, " says Mr. Reijo Liukkonen, Managing Director of Kymi Telephone Company.

The Nokia Easywave Access makes it possible to connect a GSM radio network to a wireline switch. An access node, DAXnode 5000 WLL forms the link between a GSM radio network and the local wireline exchange. It adapts GSM signalling to wireline signalling, controls the base station network and takes care of authentication and terminal identification. It also converts GSM data to fixed network data. It is interfaced to the local exchange by V5, an open, vendor-independent interface, specified by ETSI (European Standards Institute ) and the ITU (International Telecommunication Union).

With Nokia's Easywave Access wireline operators can offer local mobility to their customers who do not want full mobility but want more than traditional fixed line services. Local mobility in the neighbourhood can be tariffed as a premium service, more than fixed line but less than full mobility.

In addition to the contract with Kymi Telephone Company Nokia has supplied its Easywave Access to the Oulu Telephone company in northern Finland. Telecomunicações de Minas Gerais (Telemig) in Brazil, has also successfully trialled the Nokia Easywave.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a broad-scope telecommunications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors. With sales in 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion) in 1997. Nokia, listed on NYSE (NOK.A), employs more than 38,000 people worldwide.
