Nokia, TIME and European GSM operators provide online information service for GSM phones during World Cup 1998
May 25, 1998

Nokia today announced that it has set up an online soccer World Cup 1998 results and information service in association with Time Inc. New Media and a number of European GSM operators. The Time.com via Nokia service can be accessed with any GSM mobile phone with short message send and receive capability in the networks of the participating European GSM operators. The service is based on the Nokia developed Smart Messaging technology and the contents are provided by the Time Online World Cup Internet site www.time.com/worldcup. Users of Time.com via Nokia service can request information about the results of matches, team information, top scores etc. from the site's daily coverage of the events.

Nokia has invited European GSM operators to participate in the campaign. The following operators have announced that their customers can access the service: Vodafone/Car Phone Warehouse (U.K.), Libertel and KPN Het Mobiele Netwerk (The Netherlands), Radiolinja and Sonera (Finland), Europolitan and Telia (Sweden), Mobilix (Denmark), and Eurotel (Czech Republic).

The Time.com via Nokia information service operates through the GSM short messages. The user types in the keyword and sends it as a short message to the network server. The request is processed and the result of the query is sent back to the mobile phone.

The service is best accessed with the so called Smart Phones, the Nokia 8110i and the Nokia 9000i Communicator. These phones can store the menu for the services, which enables easy access to information. The same information is, however, available for any GSM phone with short message send and receive capability.

"Through the Time.com via Nokia service we want to demonstrate how the value added services, such as Smart Messaging, are an essential part of the extra functionality for the users of the GSM phone today. Accessing the service with a GSM phone is very simple, but the easiest service can be achieved by using the Smart Phones, the Nokia 8110i and the Nokia 9000i Communicator. We are glad to work with Time, which is a recognized leader in newsmagazine publishing and a guarantee for high quality content for the service," said Anssi Vanjoki, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe and Africa.

"Our relationship with Nokia illustrates the importance we attach to delivering our branded content to the widest audience through the broadest range of technology." said Linda McCutcheon, President, Time Inc. New Media. "That's why we're very excited at the opportunity Time.com via Nokia extends to GSM mobile phone users who will be able to access TIME.com World Cup for all the results and breaking news from World Cup 1998 ."
