diAx Switzerland opts for turnkey Nokia GSM 900/1800 solution
April 20, 1998

Nokia and diAx AG, Switzerland, have signed a contract valued initially at approximately CHF 200 million for the supply of a full turnkey dualband GSM 900/1800 network. Nokia will supply equipment to cover both GSM 900 and GSM 1800 frequencies. Nokia will be the sole supplier to the diAx GSM network. Deliveries will commence immediately and the contract will run for the next four years.

In addition to network planning, site acquisition and civil works, network implementation and technical support, Nokia will provide network operation services to diAx until the end of 1999. Nokia will supply a complete GSM network to diAx, including the Nokia mobile switching centre (MSC), home location registers (HLR), a base station system, cellular transmission, short message service centre and the Nokia NMS/2000 network management system. Additionally, Nokia will supply its Intelligent Network solution to enable the creation of value-added services in the diAx network.

"Nokia's proven track record of fast rollout and capabilities in dualband networks in the field of GSM, was one of the key reasons why we picked them as our GSM supplier," states Mr Jean-Jacques Vouga, Team Leader Mobile, diAx AG. "In order to provide basic voice services and value-added services to our customers, we need to have the network up and running as quickly as possible, which we know Nokia can provide for us."

"Once again, Nokia's capability to provide a high-quality GSM network with the availability of value-added services from day one has proven its success with diAx," states Mr Mikko Heikkonen, President, Network Systems, Nokia Telecommunications. "diAx will be able to provide a market-leading network solution for their customers, within a very short rollout time."

Nokia has delivered dual band network base stations to a number of the world's leading operators. Nokia was the first manufacturer to gain type approval for a dual band base station and is still the only supplier with this product available.

diAx is a joint venture between diAx holding – owned by over 50 Swiss power utilities and the Swiss Re – and SBC Communications Inc., the third largest Telecommunications enterprise in the US. diAx also owns the second largest fibre optic trunking network of Switzerland.

With this co-operation, the number of operators to which Nokia supplies GSM technology increases to 70 operators in 35 countries. Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia develops, manufactures and supplies mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors to consumers and businesses in 130 countries. Net sales totalled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion) in 1997. Nokia employs more than 36,000 people worldwide.
