New SDH contract for Nokia in fixed access networks
April 17, 1998

Nokia and Ji’An PTB, Jiangxi province, eastern China, have signed a contract for the supply of Nokia's SYNFONET SDH solution, including the STM-16, to China Telecom. Deliveries will start immediately.

Ji'An PTB will use Nokia's complete SYNFONET SDH solution to support their expanding fixed subscriber trunk traffic. Nokia's solution portfolio covering SDH, access solutions and integrated network management was instrumental in Ji'An PTB's decision to choose Nokia.

"We are very pleased to be chosen as an SDH supplier by Ji’An PTB. The access market in China is a highly competitive one and this contract underlines our competence as a partner for fixed networks to China's telecom operators," says Folke Ahlbäck, Senior Vice President, Nokia, Greater China. “This achievement also indicates our increasing commitment to Jiangxi PTA, the parent company to Ji’An PTB, since the signing of the Jiangxi Nokia GSM contract in 1995”.

With a total provincial population of over 36 million people, Ji’An PTB is one of largest of the 11 telecommunications bureaux in Jiangxi. Access networks will play an increasingly important role in the implementation of these coming fixed subscriber expansions.

Nokia Telecommunications develops and manufactures infrastructure equipment and systems for mobile and fixed networks. Nokia has developed a comprehensive SDH solution, the Nokia SYNFONET, for access and transport networks, incorporated under a full network management system. Nokia SYNFONET enables the operator to flexibly build their network for future data and broadband solutions. Nokia's SDH technology has been supplied to close to 80 customers in over 20 countries.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is a broad-scope telecommunications company supplying mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors. With sales in 130 countries, net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion) in 1997. Nokia employs more than 36,000 people world-wide.
