Tele Danmark selects Nokia to build turnkey GSM 1800 network in The Netherlands
April 16, 1998

In an agreement valued at a few hundred million Dutch Guilders, Nokia will provide Tele Danmark a full turnkey solution enabling state of the art wireless technology. This new network will eventually encompass the entire geographic boundaries of The Netherlands, where Tele Danmark is in discussion with Belgacom to form a partnership creating a new nationwide wireless operator. Equipment deliveries will commence immediately and will continue into 1999. The system will comprise a wide range of services including network planning, site acquisition, civil works, installation and commissioning of all network elements. Nokia will initially maintain and support the operations of the system following the network's commercial launch.

Nokia will supply a complete network subsystem, including mobile switching centres (MSC) and home location registers (HLR) as well as a base station system (BSC and BTS), to also include interconnect transmission capabilities. To provide enhanced wireless data services, Nokia will provide various solutions from the Nokia Artus product family. For the easy creation and implementation of a range of advanced services for GSM 1800 subscribers, Nokia will also supply its Intelligent Network solution.

"The selection of Nokia for this turnkey network underlines Nokia's experience and capabilities in this area. Additionally, this decision is important for Nokia, as, not only does it demonstrate operator confidence in Nokia's GSM capabilities but also in our advanced wireless data and Intelligent Network solutions. With increased subscriber growth, operators cannot compete purely on voice provision - differentiation must come from services," comments Mr Mika Vehviläinen, Senior Vice President, Network Systems, Nokia Telecommunications. "The strength of GSM as a total mobile solution, providing growth paths to future, high-speed data communications, justifies its status as the most widely deployed digital wireless communications standard in the world."

"This contract is an extension of the co-operation with Tele Danmark in several European countries, which already started in the early '90s", states Mr. Pentti Kamppinen, Managing Director of Nokia Nederland BV. Tele Danmark and Nokia are co-operating in Europe via Connect Austria in Austria, Belgacom in Belgium, Pannon in Hungary, Polkomtel in Poland, and now in The Netherlands. For Nokia Nederland BV, this new contract strengthens its position as a leading GSM network supplier in The Netherlands.

With this co-operation, the number of operators to which Nokia supplies GSM technology increases to 69 operators in 35 countries. Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900.

Headquartered in Finland, Nokia develops, manufactures and supplies mobile phones, mobile and fixed telecommunications networks, data communications solutions, multimedia terminals and computer monitors to consumers and businesses in 130 countries. Net sales totaled FIM 52.6 billion ($9.8 billion) in 1997. Nokia employs more than 36,000 people worldwide.
