Nokia wins GSM network expansion in Ningxia, China

Nokia and the Post and Telecommunications Adminstration Bureau of NingXia Hui Autonomous Region, People's Republic of China announce the beginning of their cooperation with the signing of an agreement for the expansion of NingXia PTA's GSM 900 network.
This network expansion will enable the NingXia PTA to provide Chinese short message services to its subscribers, whose total number will rise more than three-fold to 90,000. Deliveries start in May 1998 and the commercial services will be launched at the beginning of 1999.
Nokia will deliver GSM 900 equipment to the NingXia PTA, including the Nokia mobile switching centre, home location registers, a base station system, short message service centre and a network management system. Nokia will also provide NingXia PTA with extensive customer services, including implementation , network productivity and customer training.
Director Feng of NingXia Hui PTA says, "By using the latest GSM technology, we will meet the current and future needs of the growing market demand for mobile communications. Our reasons for choosing Nokia include their technological competence, good price/performance and good service."
As Mr Folke Ahlbäck, Senior Vice President, Nokia, Greater China explains, "Operators building GSM networks in China, are looking for high-quality GSM solutions providing capacity and coverage. In addition however, the capabilities of GSM, as a platform for wireless data solutions such as short messaging, will enable NingXia PTA to offer advanced services to their subscribers, and build a natural growth path to future broadband services."
With this co-operation, the number of operators to which Nokia supplies GSM technology increases to 68 operators in 35 countries, Nokia ranks as the world's largest supplier of GSM 1800 networks and one of the two largest in GSM 900.
