Nokia 500Xa displays 17-inch picture on 15-inch screen
March 19, 1998
Nokia's new flat panel display, the Nokia 500Xa, is a desktop liquid crystal display with a viewable diagonal size of 15.1 inches. As there is no distortion of the picture at edges and corners, the flat panel LCD display provides a larger effective screen than a CRT display of the same inch size. The effective display screen of the Nokia 500Xa corresponds to that of a 17-inch CRT display.
With its vertical viewing angle of 100 degrees and horizontal viewing angle of 120 degrees, the Nokia 500Xa can be used, for example, for the simultaneous display of sharp and flicker free pictures to several people working on a joint project. The lightweight desk panel is easy to move and fits into small spaces, an important consideration in such applications as banking, finance and hospitals.
The Nokia 500Xa is based on active matrix TFT (thin-film transistor) LCD technology. The flat-panel picture is in perfect focus across the whole screen. It also has good contrast, with a contrast ratio of 300:1, and is flicker free at all resolutions. With a response time of 30 milliseconds, the panel is suitable for moving video use. The luminance output of 250 candelas per square metre gives a uniformly bright picture. The colour palette of 16.7 million colours provides rich and true colour images.
With a maximum resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, the Nokia 500Xa offers high information density. The picture-scaling mode enables display of full screen picture or natural picture. In multi-scan operation the default VGA resolution is 720 x 400.
The user interface of the Nokia 500Xa is exceptionally simple and easy to operate. All picture adjustments are carried out by means of the rotate-and-push NaviTM Key button, with OSD menus and adjustment bars guiding the operation. Automatic adjustment provides for easy installation of the picture settings.
The audio capabilities of the Nokia 500Xa comprise integrated amplifier and speakers, and socket for external microphone. The display supports VESA DDC2B for plug & play installation of peripheral devices. USB Hub will be offered as an option.
The ergonomics approvals of the Nokia 500Xa comprise TÜV,-GS, MPR90, ISO 9241-3, ISO 921-3-8, and TCO95. The TCO95 also covers environmental compatibility of the display, its components and production. LCD displays have even lower electromagnetic emissions than CRT displays, a matter of importance in hospital applications, for example.
