Nokia 447DTC widens the scope of PC-based desktop communication
March 19, 1998
Nokia's new 447DTC is a 17-inch professional PC display with outstanding integrated audio capabilities. The display's acoustic echo cancellation system provides for hands free computer-based telephony and audio and data conferencing. The option of an integrated super VHS camera extends the communications applications of the Nokia 447DTC to include video conferencing.
The new desktop communication solution is built around a 17-inch Nokia quality monitor. The maximum horizontal frequency is 92 kHz and the display has the maximum resolution of 1280x1024. With a refresh rate of 85Hz at the maximum resolution, the picture is flicker free at all resolutions. The high resolution enables the professional user to display much more data on the Nokia 447DTC's screen than on that of a standard 17-inch monitor. This is of great importance in audio or video conferencing where the participants discuss and possibly modify data displayed on the monitors.
The Nokia 447DTC sets a new standard for professional PC audio. The integrated audio equipment comprises an amplifier system, speakers, a subwoofer and a microphone. Nokia's signal processing expertise is the key to the superior audio input and output of the Nokia 447DTC. The microphone is equipped with acoustic noise and echo cancellation employing digital signal processing. Loudspeaker crossover and equalisation are similarly based on digital signal processing. As an optional accessory, the display can be equipped with a special handset designed for use in combination with desktop teleconferencing.
The microphone is located above the screen. The optional super VHS camera, enabling video and still picture input, is also located above the screen. The Nokia 447DTC features the familiar Nokia user interface. There are separate push button controls for brightness and contrast, the two most frequently adjusted settings. The other picture parameters can be adjusted by means of the NaviTM Key control. Adjustment is guided by the On-Screen Display.
The Nokia 447DTC has the TCO95 approval, which sets stringent requirements for user ergonomics, level of electromagnetic emissions, power consumption, and environmental impact. The environmental requirements of the TCO95 cover the whole life cycle of the display from materials used in production to final disposal of the product.
The Nokia 447DTC is a flexible tool for utilising the full communication potential of computer networks and high-speed data transmission links. The new display enables the PC to be used for sharing, discussion and modification of displayed data in a teleconference or a video conference. With three out of every four PCs already linked to a local area network, the scope of potential LAN telephony applications alone is vast.
